Specialisation
For the third semester student can choose between the University of Verona and Vilnius University. The 3rd semester consists of three modules, 10 ECTS each. University of Verona focuses on patient safety and quality issues and Vilnius University focuses on the social aspects of health care. Both universities will deliver the course related to the managing of innovation in health care.
Specialisatio: Patient safety and quality issues- University of Verona
The courses are aimed to train the students to assess the different proportions of risk in complex health care systems and to organise and improve risk management programs by a systematic approach; moreover it aims to give expertise needed for supporting development of care processes which set as priority the centrality of patient and his safety. Special course is dedicated to the new technologies that are used in health care and their impact on both patients and medical personnel.
- Quality and the consumer, 10 ECTS
Lately, knowledge of citizens about the health system strategies is increasing significantly. Internet and other information and communication technologies permit citizens to access the latest existential achievements. In the same way the influence of patient associations on planning and implementation of health policies is growing as well. During the course various strategies that put the voice of the patients as the axis of health planning will be analysed in depth. The topics of health care design around the patient, design and implementation of continuous improvement and user engagement in planning and evaluating services will be discussed during this module.
- European health legislation processes, 10 ECTS
In the European Union the subsidiary principle configure an important part of the legislative strategies of the European institutions. In the area of public health important legislative activities and recommendations to the member states have been developed. Part of these pieces of legislation concerns the mobility of citizens in order to provide them with health insurance and access to health services of high quality in all the EU member states. This module will follow the development of the European health legislation regarding the issues of health insurance and citizen mobility. The topics include health systems and EU policy, Current EU health legislation, how legislation is created and applied, and global lessons: emerging trends in health legislation.
- Managing innovation, 10 ECTS
Organisational culture and work methods are changing drastically in all areas and especially visible this change is in the area of health. New technologies affect work methods in various levels of health service organisation. The revolutionary technological development, among the information and communication technologies, will have a profound effect on the structure of services and medical processes. The key characteristics of the health services in this context are: hospital services will gradually be reserved only for patients with short stay or emergency, the period of stay will be reduced, the hospital environment will equipped with technology products of newest generations (experiments are currently being made with wide-band communications, treatment without needles, body sensors, sophisticated monitoring systems, etc.), the stays of medium and long period will be carried out in special small-size residences or at home. The topics of the module will cover ethics and technology, implications of emerging technologies, medical technologies and telemedicine, biotechnology and biomedicine.
Specialisation: Social aspects of health care- Vilnius university
Courses at Vilnius University will focus on internship profile (practice oriented) nevertheless student research capacity building will also be present. The courses at Vilnius University will provide specialization focused at population/community based perspective on sustainable regional health systems. Vilnius University will deliver the following courses:
- Sociological perspectives on population health, 10 ECTS
During the module the social and health cohesion will be looked upon, discussing types of illness and health, health institutions, values and influence factors on the healthy behaviour. A special topic will be dedicated to the sociology of the medical profession and health professions. Another issue that will be covered is psycho-sociology of health, including community, social nets and health, professional-patient relation, self-medication and psychosomatic, as well as environmental sociology and hospital organization. Another themes, covered by the module, are social nets and epidemiology, concept of the social capital and its indicators, healthy business management and quality strategies on social capital and health.
The organization system in the process of modernisation of the public health administration is determined by the level of decentralisation and the community participation in planning and management. Several models that exist in the European Union will be distinguished and studied during the module. The following aspects, covered during the module, determine planning and implementation of health policies: technological development, history of professional organisations, interest and lobby groups, social-economic environment, history of the institutions and the model of management ad financing. The attitudes of health professional is determined by their integration in the community environment. During the module the impact of the interaction between the health system and its regional environment will be researched. Various implementation strategies of the community in health planning and management will be discussed, analyzing different European regions. The formation of Heath Cluster in different European regions will have a special place in the module. The topics will cover advocacy and citizenship, politics of health care, expert patient and building engaged communities.
